実物大の三つの原子爆弾のコア。ガジェットやファットマンに用いられた放射性プルトニウムコアは熱を発し、銀メッキにはblistersができてしまったため、それは金箔で覆われた。またコアをuranium tamper plugに入れる際にも、その隙間を埋めるために、0.013mmのごく薄い金箔が使われた。
日本では、父たちの暮らした金沢（その地名も金の沢）が、金箔の伝統工芸品の最も有名な産地である。

Represented at actual size, these are the cores of the three atomic bombs. The radioactive plutonium cores of Gadget and Fat Man produced so much heat that they blistered the silver plating, which then had to be patched with gold leaf. Further, a thin sheet of gold was used to close the 0.013 mm air gaps where the core fit into the uranium tamper plug.
In Japan, the area most famed for its traditional crafts using gold leaf is Kanazawa (whose name means stream of gold ), where my father and his father made their home.
