THE TOKYO TOILET @ 恵比寿公園

渋谷区全面協力のもと、日本財団が進める渋谷区内公共トイレプロジェクト「THE TOKYO TOILET」。その１つである恵比寿公園 （渋谷区恵比寿西1-19-1） のトイレデザインをワンダーウォールが担当させていただきました。

念頭に置いたのは、建築的なものから距離を置き、遊具やベンチや樹木のように何気なく公園に佇むオブジェクトとしての在り方。日本におけるトイレの起源は、川に直接用便する「川屋」（厠の語源）と呼ばれるもので、縄文時代早期に遡ります。土で固められたもの、木材を結び付けて作ったものなど、極めてプリミティブで質素でした。そんな佇まいをイメージしながらコンクリートでできた壁を15枚いたずらに組み合わせ、トイレでありオブジェクトでもある“曖昧な領域”を構築。壁と壁の間を男性用／女性用／だれでもトイレという３つの空間への導入とするなど、人々が不思議な遊具と戯れるような、ユニークな関係性をデザインしました。

日本財団が、多様性を受け入れる社会の実現を目的に実施する公共トイレプロジェクト。渋谷区全面協力の下、性別、年齢、障害を問わず、誰もが快適に使用できる公共トイレを区内17カ所に設置する。趣旨に賛同する16人のクリエイターが参画し、デザイン・クリエイティブの力で、新しい社会のあり方を提案する。トイレの設計施工には大和ハウス工業株式会社、トイレの現状調査や設置機器の提案にはTOTO株式会社の協力を得て実施。

THE TOKYO TOILET @ Ebisu Park

THE TOKYO TOILET is a project for public toilets in Shibuya, directed by the Nippon Foundation with the full cooperation of Shibuya City. Wonderwall was in charge of designing the toilet inside Ebisu Park (1-19-1, Ebisu Nishi, Shibuya-ku).
What we kept in mind was a facility that distances itself from architectural concepts/elements and would exist naturally inside a park like playground equipments, benches, and trees. In Japan, the origin of toilets is 川屋 (kawaya, which is the source of the word 厠), which were huts (ya 屋) that stood over the river (kawa 川) that date back to the Neolithic times of early Jomon period (10,000 to 6,000 BCE). These huts seem to have been of primitive and simple designs, often made of hardened soil or pieces of wood that were bound together. Trying to envision the appearance and atmosphere of the primitive kawaya of the past, we built an “ambiguous space” that is simultaneously an object and a toilet by randomly combining 15 concrete walls. We designed a unique relationship as if people are being invited to play and interact with a curious piece of playground equipment through various means including, for example, by using the spaces between the walls to lead users into three different spaces designed for men, women, and one for everyone.
