"A year after I left home, I took my mother to dinner and told her I could no longer keep the Sabbath. We drove to the nicest place I could afford, a Chili’s in Poughkeepsie, New York, and I tried to explain that I had looked for God on my own and found nothing there. It’s an old story, a cliché. Eve hears a whisper in the trees. A church girl leaves home and sheds her faith. If the story is about defying God, you can be sure how it ends. So I did not celebrate my newfound freedom. I waited for the lightning to come. When it didn’t, I tried to explain myself. I tried to tell my mother why I was turning my back on the faith that had kept us both alive." @raven_leilani shares her essay, "Turning My Back on the Faith that Saved Me;" tap the link in our bio to read the full piece.
