As a professional photographer who specializes in the polar regions and North America’s bears, I never had the opportunity to photograph frogs in the wild—until my recent trip to Costa Rica. I was totally outside my comfort zone during my stay in the tropics. I battled heat and humidity and crawled along the muddy forest floor—surrounded by creatures I never wished to encounter—all in the hope of finally being able to photograph these adorable frogs. During one of my first night walks (accompanied by an expert guide to protect me from venomous snakes and spiders), we found this tiny emerald glass frog. As they’re so small—just three centimeters (one inch) long—I used my macro lens and an offsite flash with a diffuser to capture its beautiful eyes.
