In 1960, John F. Kennedy defeated Richard Nixon in a campaign that carries an air of destiny. But Kennedy’s bid for the Presidential nomination was a long shot, and his victory in the general election was one of the closest in American history. As part of its strategy, his campaign commissioned an election simulator—a machine that, long before Facebook or Google or Cambridge Analytica, used data to predict and simulate voter behavior. At the link in our bio, read Jill Lepore on the 1960 election and the team of data scientists who manipulated American voters in one of the largest political-science research projects ever conducted.
