As part of @pam_boy’s manifesto, he commissioned @williamcult to discuss the meaning of Black hair. Ndatira writes, ‘To quote Chris Rock’s ‘Good Hair’ documentary (2009): “The more relaxed your hair is, the more relaxed white people are around you. Nappy makes whites unhappy.”’ He goes on to explain, ‘Black hairstyles can still be discriminated against in the workplace. The US army only allowed braided hair with its uniforms after 2017. From the late ‘80s people started using weaves, a costly and time-consuming process of sewing hair into the scalp. This is a business which generates $90 billion a year. A weave with Brazilian hair can set you back thousands of dollars and take up to four hours in a salon chair. Weaves are also status symbols, like a designer bag of expensive shoes.’
