In ancient Mesopotamia, cylinder seals like this one were used as a marker of identity, much like a signature today 🖋
Each seal is engraved in minute detail with its own scene, so that when it is pressed or rolled into clay, it leaves a unique impression. Swipe to see how this one unrolls.
This particular seal is over 2,600 years old, and measures just 2.5cm high. It shows a winged disc supported by scorpion-men in the centre, flanked by a worshipper on the left and a god on the right. A hero holds stags and gazelles on each side.
🔎 Cut and drilled cylinder seal made from cornelian. Neo-Assyrian, 700–600 BC.
