Florida representative Ted Yoho’s recent accosting of New York representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@aoc) on the Capitol steps clearly warranted an apology, but the one Yoho offered on Wednesday was wildly insufficient. Today, Ocasio-Cortez took the House floor by storm with an incendiary speech directed at Yoho, in which she responded to his earlier invocation of his wife and two daughters: “I am someone’s daughter too. My father, thankfully, is not alive to see how Mr. Yoho treated his daughter.”
“What I do have issue with is using women—our wives and daughters—as shields and excuses for poor behavior,” said Ocasio-Cortez, noting that she is two years younger than Yoho’s youngest daughter and adding, “I am here because I have to show my parents that I am their daughter and that they did not raise me to accept abuse from men.”
