De passage dans la salle du Manège, faites une halte pour découvrir la sculpture du Vieux pêcheur, dit Sénèque mourant, sculptée au IIème siècle après J.-C. ⤵️ - 👀 Dissimulé derrière un mur au centre de la salle, un extraordinaire vieillard semble tremper dans son sang. Il s'agit probablement de l'image d'un pêcheur, sculpté en marbre noir, dans cette veine vériste qu’aimaient les Romains, selon un type de statuaire créé à l'époque hellénistique. - 🔎 Très restaurée et placée dans une vasque à la surface couleur rouge sang, elle fut identifiée à Sénèque, le précepteur de Néron, contraint au suicide. La statue fut célèbre, appréciée pour le goût des récits de morts sublimes si caractéristiques du XVIIè siècle. When you are in the Salle du Manège, look for the sculpture of an old fisherman, known as the ‘Dying Seneca’ and made in the 2nd century BC. ⤵️ - 👀 Hidden behind a wall in the middle of the room, this incredible statue in black marble depicts an elderly man who appears to be standing in a pool of his own blood. It most likely depicts a fisherman, a realistic statue type created during the Hellenistic period that was very popular amongst the Romans. - 🔎 Heavily restored and placed in a basin with a blood red surface, it has been identified as Seneca, the private tutor of Nero who was forced to commit suicide. Characteristic of the 17th century, such renditions of sublime death were greatly popular.
