Black lives should not be taken from this earth, just because your skin is black, you should not be perceived as a threat,” says Nikkolas Smith, an illustrator, concept artist and author based in Los Angeles.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Eight years ago, Nikkolas began creating digital paintings as a tribute to the countless Black lives being lost across the nation. Beginning as a series on Instagram dubbed “Sunday Sketch,” his first portrait was shared on the day of Trayvon Martin’s death.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ With his mission to be a voice to the voiceless, every week Nikkolas reflects on various moments—usually conflicts— happening at that time as well as the many unknown Black faces seen fighting for justice and equality.
