Like so many Revolutionary war heroes,he began his activism as a young man.  He was the youngest of the Big Six Civil Rights Leaders. As a teenager he organized the lunch counter boycotts in Tennessee and helped lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He had been arrested 24 times by his 21st birthday. He spent 40 days in the Mississippi State Penitentiary for registering blacks to vote. Despite his youth,John lead the Freedom Riders in 1963 and was the first rider to be savagely beaten when he stepped off the bus in Rick Hill,South Carolina. Klansman beat him unconscious again in the Montgomery Bus Station and left him for dead as Alabama troopers and FBI agents looked on taking notes. He lead the Selma March and suffered a fractured skull at the hands of Sheriff’s Deputies at the Edmund Pettus Bridge. He helped organize the 1963 March on Washington and spoke right before Martin Luther King gave his “I have a Dream “speech. He was the youngest speaker and was the last to remain alive.  He became friends with my father in 1963,joined his presidential campaign in 1968 and was beside him when he was shot and with us in Good Samaritan hospital when my dad died. “ They kill our friends”,he said”And they kill our leaders”. He remained close to my mother and all of her children during the 52 years since. All of us treasured his friendship. I am grateful for his kindness and generosity to me and my family and for his leadership to our country.
