Al D. Rodriguez was my best friend, the love of my life. We met in NYC as I graduated from college in the 90’s. Most of these photos, from when we first met to right before he passed, were taken by him or me because we were inseparable. “You are my heart.”, he would say to me. He celebrated me; my heart, mind, body and soul. We celebrated each other. It was a platonic, joyful relationship. He saw something special in me long before there were Twitter and Instagram likes, before the fame monster would claim me. He was my soulmate and one of the few people who loved me enough to claim me AND call me in, through all the ups and downs of life. Once I finished at Spamalot end of 2005, he flew to L.A. to help me settle into my new job. Within a year he moved back to NYC because one of his bffs was diagnosed with cancer and he was that kind of friend. A year after he left L.A., in the Summer of 2008, while I was in NYC, I got a call that he was in the ER. Within 6 weeks, on July 30th 2008, our loving, tender and fierce Mother AL passed away. None of us saw it coming. Liver cancer is like that. During the 4 weeks that followed, as I neared my 33rd birthday, I started writing “Everything Has Changed”. I had a record deal with Decca, got set up with Mark Wilder, in Sept. 2008 to finish the song. Thank you, Mark. All I knew was I needed to get it out of me. The pain was debilitating. The last day I sat down to sing and play the piano at the same time to lay down one take of a raw unfinished demo. I went home and the demo sat there. 10 years later, while Tim Manly and I were writing “S”’s story, I realized the song was meant for Brave House. We implemented it as the underscoring for “S”’s last scene. It is a song about the love I had with AL and the unbearable pain of losing him. He’s still with me, and I’m so grateful for the time we had. Sometimes our raw unfiltered messy art is what’s needed to support us in surrendering to the reality of loss, grief and change.
