The Gwich'in have been fighting for decades to protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, known to them as “Iizhik Gwats’an Gwandaii Goodlit” (The Sacred Place Where Life Begins). The Trump administration has taken aggressive steps to fast-track oil and gas drilling lease sales and development on these lands. Harm to the land is harm to the Gwich'in people. The photographs in this post were made on the unceded lands of the Neets’ąįį, Gwichyaa Gwich'in, and the Tanana Dene Athabascan Peoples of what is now called Alaska. Keri Oberly has been photographing the Gwich'in's relentless work to protect their food security and sacred land. Photo: @kerioberly ⠀
