It’s Hindustani slang, and the man who gave it common currency was Robert Clive. His early career in England was of an upper-class petty gangster but let loose in India as a leader of the East India Company, he filled his boots with wealth beyond imagining. William Dalrymple calls his rule in Bengal "the supreme act of corporate violence in world history," and the system of tax maximization that he instituted is said to be the chief cause of the Bengal Famine of 1769 that killed 10 million. Some British parliamentarians attempted to censure him, but without success: fully one quarter of members held shares in the same East India Company. While shooting these quiet scenes during London's lockdown, I was astonished to find Clive’s statue, next to the Foreign Office: "Clive of India," his title taken from an entire subcontinent.
