The middle of his nearly two-hour long set included a performance of Star Spangled Banner which would go down as one of the most iconic performances at Woodstock – and become symbolic of the entire 1960s. Firmly cemented as a moment in cultural history, critics were left questioning the motive behind the performance. While Hendrix took the stage at 9 a.m. on eight minutes of sleep and bent the anthem on his all-white Strat, war was raging across the globe. 35,000 American troops had died in Vietnam while, back in the States, the people were marching for Civil Rights and peace. 400,000 gathered in Woodstock that weekend in August, listening to Jimi evoke the sounds of combat and dissonance on his guitar, even dipping into the melody of Taps, a song traditionally played at military funerals. Later, when he was interviewed by Dick Cavett, Hendrix said he didn't think his performance was unorthodox – he thought it was beautiful. Illustration by @adamvillacin」7月5日 3時19分 - fender
