Chosen as the emblem of the United States because of its longevity, strength and majestic features, the bald eagle is the only species of sea eagle endemic to North America. In the late 20th century, this raptor was on the brink of extinction in the U.S., but populations have since recovered, and the species was removed from the U.S. government's list of endangered and threatened species in 1995 and 2007, respectively.
