It was so cold my breath crystallized in the air in front of me. We were surrounded by incredible numbers of orcas and humpbacks gorging on vast schools of herring; it was impossible to count them all. I scanned the horizon through the darkness, waiting for an orca to slice the inky surface with a black dorsal fin, when a humpback tail exploded out of the ocean right beside us. I raised my camera, shooting at ten frames a second. It all happened so fast I was sure that I'd missed the moment–until I glanced down at the back of my camera, and saw a curtain of backlit water pouring off this tail. Now that #COVID19 has grounded most of the world, I feel fortunate to be in a position where I can give back by sharing some of my favorite images from around the world.
