On Canada’s birthday, we choose to celebrate the legacy of North Vancouver’s Harry Jerome, who, 60 years ago this month, became the fastest human on the planet, paving the way for multiple generations of Canadian track stars, from his pioneering spirit both in and out of the blocks.⁣⁣

On July 15, 1960 at an Olympic qualifying meet in Saskatoon, Jerome smashed the 100-metre world record, becoming the world’s fastest man at 9.9 seconds. Time keepers rounded up to an even 10.0 seconds, not believing that a 19 year old Black man could best then record holder, Germany’s Armin Hary, being noted instead as a shared record.
⁣⁣
Despite this astounding feat, the newspapers also painted Jerome as ungrateful, and his victory was overshadowed by his refusal to march in the athlete’s parade prior to the race, choosing mental preparation over a distracting charade. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time Harry was forced to battle through racial discrimination, nor would it be his last, as he continued to be judged by a different set of rules and expectations than his lighter skinned peers.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In his retirement, Harry used his platform and voice to speak out against the depiction of of Black Canadians in media, fought to remove wage discrimination barriers, and lobbied major department stores and fashion labels to show a visual representation of all Canadians in their catalogues and campaigns. Harry Jerome, a true Canadian hero, a sporting icon, and the first human to run a sub 10.0 second 100m.⁣
