When I was a professional dog trainer, using a harness was always my first recommendation because it's easy on a dog's neck/trachea. Easy walk harness was also my go-to gear to teach loose-leash-walking. (instead of a regular harness with a clip on the back)
Other things you can try to make your walkie time more enjoyable: •Exercise your dog before the walk to reduce energy levels. •Use food and toys. Instead of feeding them in a bowl, feed them on walks! •If you have multiple dogs, train them separately! •If your dog is reactive, start your training when it's quiet outside. •Practice the "heel" as a position in the house first.
