Auguste Veillon’s passion for the Orient was sparked in the 1850s, and he travelled from his native Switzerland to Egypt, Constantinople, Tunisia and the Holy Land.
Travelling to such places at the time was adventurous and Veillon was one of few Western painters to brave the discomfort.
In 1886, he travelled alone by horse for 12 days to see Jerusalem, Nablus, the Sea of Galilee, Nazareth and Haifa.
He was particularly struck by the Sea of Galilee, as evidenced by this large-scale work realised at that time, in which the painter placed greater importance on the sense of calm and the spiritual atmosphere than on topological accuracy.
