In 1922, Dorothy Todd—an out gay woman entering her forties, described as “full of energy, full of genius”—became the second editor of @British Vogue. Her assistant was a stylish 24-year-old Australian called Madge Garland and over the course of Todd’s tenure, the two women fell in love. Partners in both life and work, the duo (swipe to see them together) are said to have transformed #BritishVogue from a magazine largely “confining its pages to hats and frocks” to a publication with serious avant-garde intentions.
