To that point Maui had no established climbing but lots of erstwhile climbers. A rock-hungry crew contributed funds for corrosion-resistant titanium bolts and within a year 25 routes rated 5.9 to 5.14b were cleaned and equipped. The Maui climbing hub was born. Climbers instigated clean-ups, broke up fights, and at the request of the leaseholder, ran off people cutting live kiawe for firewood and put up signs outlining basic “rules” for the area which is a state reserve. These days you’ll find a dedicated coterie of about a dozen climbers roping up every Sunday afternoon.
