The current Saharan dust episode is leading to the worst dust storm in the Caribbean in decades — and it’s heading to the US. On Monday, the dust turned the Caribbean’s tropical blue skies into a hazy brown-gray color. “It is definitely historic,” Olga Mayol-Bracero, a researcher at the University of Puerto Rico, told CNN. Many of her colleagues across the Caribbean said they have not seen air quality conditions this bad in their entire careers. The dust layer is so thick you can see it on weather satellites.
