When some of the world’s largest fashion brands canceled their orders in Bangladesh factories, risking millions of garment workers’ jobs and up to $6 billion in losses, the news made international headlines. Consumer outrage and the #PayUp petition followed, but a similar problem is playing out right here in the United States. Order cancellations amid COVID-19 have put many Los Angeles garment workers out of a job, and they were already being severely underpaid: The average worker earns just $6 an hour. Many are undocumented immigrants and don't have access to healthcare or unemployment benefits, either. Lindsay Medoff, an activist and owner of @suaysewshop, found an impactful way to step up and help: She partnered with a farm to create fresh produce boxes for those garment workers and their families.
