As I moved to look back at Joel I could hear him say to himself “He’s beautiful” . The 70’s period styling had transported him to another place in time. Somehow I found the nerve to ask a rather personal question. “Joel have you ever been with a woman?”. This breaks his gaze as he smiles , looks at me and responds with a twinkle in his eye, “Matty I’ve been with 8 women in my life….. but over a thousand men”. This was Joel. He was a lover of films, celebrity, art, stories, Ralph Lauren, Ojai, New York, antiquing , conversation, but most of all STYLE. He was the first director I ever worked with that would excise dialogue with the confidence that it wasn't necessary. The first to ever have the gravitas to be able to speak to an A list actor with the authority of a parent. The first to fearlessly come to the defense of himself and his crew to a studio on the power and promise of his experience. From riding the subway with Andy Warhol to writing Car Wash at The Madonna Inn this man had a wealth of stories to share, but the class and discretion to never tell them twice.
