1935, The Padlock symbol.
The Schiaparelli padlock first appeared in the Maison’s Haute Couture Collection, used as the enclosure of a bag in the 1935 winter collection. Typically used to close luggage or safekeep precious or private items, the use of the padlock for an everyday handbag gave an air of mysticism to the Schiaparelli woman. As always, Elsa deemed the ordinary extraordinary, her creations the guardian of a woman's private world. The padlock signals protection, a way of safeguarding hidden treasures while also inviting curiosity. 
Following its initial use in 1935, the padlock has been a consistent code of the Maison.  Artistic director @danielroseberry has used it throughout the recent couture and rtw collections: imagined as oversized earrings encrusted in freshwater pearls, as bijoux - buttons, fastenings for jackets, a couture embroidery made from repurposed vintage elements found in Paris street markets, and most recently as the golden lock for the new Secret Trapunto Bag.
