I cannot believe that at the age of 29 I am finally learning what the true meaning of Juneteenth is. Feel free to comment something else you’ve recently learned that was conveniently left out of history class. I’ll start: In 2013 the Supreme Court struck down a key component of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 making it legal for states to change voter laws without federal regulation. Don’t understand what that means? That’s okay, neither did I. Overall, it gives states the ability to implement laws that increase voter suppression, e.g. strict photo ID laws. I know many of you are saying, “no this just helps against voter fraud!” That’s actually not true. These state laws greatly target minority groups and although taken at face value they may seem racially neutral, they’re anything but. In North Dakota, after the state enacted its current ID law in 2017, 19% of Native Americans lacked qualifying ID. Texas permits voters to use a handgun license to vote, but not a student ID from a state university. More than 80% of handgun licenses issued to Texans in 2018 went to white Texans, while more than half of the students in the University of Texas system are racial or ethnic minorities. 🤔
