“Juneteenth is an annual holiday celebrated on June 19th to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African-American people in the US. The holiday recognizes the day the news of the emancipation first reached Galveston, Texas, in the aftermath of the Civil War. Although slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation, and even though the 13th Amendment was ratified in 1865, slavery still continued for an additional 2 1/2 years.
.
Juneteenth became a state holiday in Texas in 1980, and today, 47 of the 50 states subsequently followed suit. The day is also celebrated outside the United States, with organizations in a number of countries using the day to recognize the end of slavery and to celebrate the culture and achievements of Black Americans.
.
Black History is American history. Juneteenth is a representation of freedom and liberation that is often overlooked. As I reflect on my education about Black History, I don't recall learning about the significance of this day in school. Thankfully, my mother and grandmother took great pride in our heritage. Family fellowship and laughter was our way of observing the day, we celebrated with soul food, enjoying - Peach Cobbler, Buttermilk Cornbread, and Carrot Cake.
.
More importantly, my family used this opportunity to educate me on the past, knowing it would most likely be omitted from my school curriculum. As a young student, my family taught me about Black Wall Street, black inventors, and other Black pioneers throughout history. We also discussed in detail the contributions of Black women to our communities, and what I could do as a young woman to excel, even though I may not see a young woman who looked like me represented.
.
We must continue to teach our country's true history to ensure we don’t repeat the mistakes of the past and further marginalize this nation's people of color. Now is the time to stand in solidarity with our Black communities. Today we recognize, observe, and celebrate our ancestors who survived the evil practice of slavery and salute the living who fight equality and justice for each of us.” — @totallytanayia, FG Key Account Manager
