Today marks the 155th anniversary of #Juneteenth, a symbolic date that commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. But June 19th isn't the date that the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln declaring all enslaved people freed. It actually marks the date when news of freedom reached enslaved people in Texas, the most remote state in the Confederacy, two years later.

As we become more aware of the significance of Juneteenth as a holiday, we also come to understand how words shape our world. The language used to describe slavery and enslaved people can perpetuate anti-Blackness by whitewashing, dehumanizing, and using passive terms to describe anti-Black racism.
