Sadly, during the war, black Americans in many U.S. states were still subject to the Jim Crow laws, and the military was racially segregated. As a result, they were subjected to discrimination, both within and outside the Army. Yet In spite of all they experienced, the Tuskegee airmen overcame segregation and prejudice to become one of the most highly respected fighter groups of World War II. I was fortunate to meet one of these heroic airmen, Allie C. Peek. It was a hot Memorial Day in the year 2000, and Allie graciously sat for a portrait. I recall sensing Allie’s pride and confidence; he had an unmistakable presence about him. In this brief moment, I suddenly discovered that when Allie’s eyes looked out toward the airfield where we were, a reflection of the American flag filled his eyes. It was a moment I’ll never forget. It was inspiring to spend time with Allie, who, like so many other African-American soldiers, faced not only the horrors of World War II but discrimination at the hands of their own countrymen. Despite that injustice, they still believed in and were willing to die for the American Dream.
