Best known for its protest anthem, “F*ck Tha Police,” 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙊𝙪𝙩𝙩𝙖 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙤𝙣 is the debut studio album by rap group N.W.A. The song itself, a musical tirade against police brutality, was condemned by the FBI. But the group’s denunciation extended past just law enforcement – the music video for “Straight Outta Compton” was even banned from MTV, with the network denouncing its “gratuitous violence.” Today, we honor the album’s legacy in the music industry, as protesters around the world continue to use N.W.A’s words as a slogan. In the years following its release, the album has since gone triple-platinum, been selected by the Library of Congress for the National Recording Registry, lent its name to N.W.A’s 2015 biopic, became the first rap album inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and inspired countless musicians.
