I am a proudly Queer, First Nations X Second Generation, Third Culture Kid. On my Mother’s side I am Aboriginal, from the Thubbaga people of the Wiradjuri Nation. On my Father’s side I am “Filipino", from Negros Occidental in the Visayan Islands.  I use Female pronouns, although gender is a bit blurry for me and I feel very masc most of the time.  I am a musician who hates being confined to genre and I am constantly reinventing my sound and pushing myself outside of my creative comfort zones. I would be remiss not to acknowledge that all of the music I have ever made has been heavily informed by Black American Music and I would not be the musician I am today without the influence of this culture. I am extremely grateful to the artists who have inspired me and I humbly recognise that I am a guest in all of these genres of music.  My most recent LP, ‘Native Tongue’ was released in 2018 and through the telling of my own personal experiences and family history, I spoke about feelings of grief, displacement, the longing for cultural connection and the reclamation of cultural identity.  I’d like to say a big thank you to Phoebe for having me #sharethemicnowaustralia today and for continuing to give a platform to the Black Lives Matter Movement. Over the next couple of posts I will be taking the opportunity to talk to you about racism, allyship and why Black Lives Matter is relevant to my people. As these are instagram posts I will only be skimming the surface of some very large conversations, but I hope that some of this information might help you in understanding something you may not have considered before.
