Joy Division's 'Unknown Pleasures' turns 41 today. Instead of reiterating how often we listen to 'She's Lost Control', let's talk about the iconic cover artwork.

It was designed by Peter Saville, graphic designer and co-founder of Factory Records. While people had been speculating about its symbolisation, it was later explained by astronomers and Saville himself that it's a stacked plot of the radio emissions given out by a pulsar.

It is influenced by the “Cambridge Pulse 1919” – (19 hours 19 seconds) which depicts stacked pulsar plots. The inspiration for the image came from The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy (1977 edition) but further back still the original stacked pulsar plot was devised by Harold Craft in the 1960’s. Here is what Harold Craft had to say to Jen Christiansen in an article from the Scientific American.

“So then, I wrote the program so that I would block out when a hill here was high enough, then the stuff behind it would stay hidden. And it was pretty easy to do from a computer perspective. I also wrote a program that, instead of having these lined up vertically like this, I tilted them off at a slight angle like that so that it would look like you were looking up a hillside – which was aesthetically interesting and pleasing, but on the other hand, it just confused the whole issue.

So what happened, just in the process of putting together the thesis, I would give this to a woman draftsperson in the space sciences building at Cornell, and she would then trace this stuff with India ink, and make a much darker image of it, so that it could be printed basically.”

When we created our Soundwave collection in 2015, we looked at the digital visualisation of sound to create the soles and features of our Jungle, Nox and Sonik collections. As part of our display we recreated the original stacked pulsars using white ink onto Perspex.
