👨‍🎨 Au Salon de 1771, Chardin crée la surprise : ses ennuis de santé sont connus et certains croient qu'il a renoncé à l'art. Pourtant, les trois pastels qu’il expose font sensation ! Parmi eux, cet autoportrait le montre sur un fond bleu foncé, de trois quarts, la tête penchée, coiffé d'un bonnet blanc, ses yeux bruns scrutant par dessus les bésicles.

🖍 L'usage tardif du pastel contraint le peintre à réinventer une façon de dessiner colorée. Sa technique audacieuse, où les hachures et les touches individualisées de nuances variées reflètent sa main, met un terme à la manière lisse et achevée prônée par la tradition académique.

👀 Les autoportraits de Chardin sont intimes et psychologiques. Concentré et sûr de lui, l'artiste porte un foulard aux roses chaleureux et aux rouges attendris par les bleus et les gris. Le choix et la position de ces nuances témoignent d’une grande liberté artistique.

👨‍🎨 At the Salon of 1771, Chardin surprised everybody. People knew of his health problems, and some thought he had abandoned art, but his three-pastel drawing caused a sensation. Against a dark blue background, Chardin appears in three-quarters, his brown eyes peering over his spectacles.

🖍 Coming to pastels late in life, Chardin was obliged to reinvent a pictorial method of drawing in color. His audacious technique, whereby hatching and individual touches of various shades reflect the artist's hand, marks an end to the smooth and flawless manner favored by academic tradition.

👀 Chardin's self-portraits are intimate and psychological. Focused and self-assured, the artist sports a scarf of warm pinks, and reds softened by blues and grays. His choice and position of shades demonstrate an uncommon freedom.
