A doula provides continuous physical, emotional, support as well as education and advocacy for a mother or birthing person before, during and shortly after childbirth.I started my journey in birth work because of my own incredible birth 16 years ago at Elizabeth Seton Childbearing Center in NYC. Since my son was born its become increasingly more difficult for birthing people to have out-of hospital births. In some states, home birth is illegal. If COVID-19 has taught us anything, it’s that our medical system is fragile and fraught with gaps. We need more birth centers, we need to make home birth more accessible. We need freestanding maternity centers. We need more midwives and doulas. Our nation has built systems against midwifery and it’s time to change that. The first midwives in the USA were Black Granny Midwives who arrived during chattel slavery with ancestral wisdom & alchemy from an array of African cultures & their rich traditions & rituals for prenatal care. Black Granny Midwives are an integral part of American history that many are unfamiliar with. Over time when the nascent field of obstetrics was developing, legislative action combined with racist propaganda was used to change an entire health care system and decimate the birth village. Contributing to the development of health & reproductive disparities that persist to this day. I am inspired by our ancestors who did this work. Who laid a path to carry us forward.
