I wanted to delve into the children’s literary world, because I remember being a kid and not seeing characters in my picture books that looked like me. I wrote my children's book The Prodest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family, so that children who look like me could see themselves in a picture book and that all children would see that the parts of ourselves that might make us appear “different” are worth celebrating. . Whoever or wherever you are, we each have a role to play in changing the world and committing to doing the necessary work to create a future rooted in justice and equality. A large part of that effort starts in our hearts and homes. Let’s speak to our children and teens about diversity.
