Non-black LatinX community, there is a much older systemic colorism, colonization, and slavery created by the conquistadors in Latin America. Our history in our families and our culture is one of comparing shades of skin color and inspecting facial features to identify a person’s proximity to whiteness and worth. Our history is also one of Spanish rape on our lands and on Indigenous and African mothers. We need to be in the discomfort of this moment. We need to come to terms with our own privileges based on our proximity to whiteness in our culture and the erasure of Afro-latinidad in art history and all spaces unless they could be profitable for white consumption.
