While this is a start, it is not enough. @blmlosangeles and their coalition #peoplesbudgetla have been protesting Los Angeles’ inflated LAPD budget tirelessly for years. They’ve proposed a People’s Budget that reflects what our communities actually need. Access to resources keep people safe, not more police. The People’s Budget LA website clearly lays out effective alternatives to police spending, so I’ll include some of them here: instead of spending so much on policing, we could be investing in community-based drug and mental health treatment, education, community-based violence interruption programs, job growth, accessible and affordable housing, free public transit, education and schools, the list goes on. Our City Council Budget Committee is meeting every Monday at 2, but you don’t have to wait until next Monday to take action. Call your city council person and Mayor Garcetti NOW and demand they #defundthepolice and adopt the #peoplesbudgetla.
