“I remember growing up when it dawned on me that I loved—the word I came up with then was eccentric people—people who have a sense of freedom and safety within themselves, who make me feel safe within myself. I always felt like there was something wrong with me, why I thought the way I thought, felt the way I felt, the big feelings I had. And then I realized, ‘I can’t be anybody else. I might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but I’ve tried to be other people and it doesn’t work.
