One of my best friends is black (and I’m not saying that for a pass, it’s pertinent info to this post) and just being in her orbit, especially at work where we met almost a decade ago, I’ve witnessed her be the victim of casual racism from “well-meaning” people. And to be honest, it probably took awhile to understand the magnitude of all these slights. And how often they do happen. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve learned a lot from my friend even through her simply sharing her own experiences growing up as a black woman. I consider myself very lucky to have had friends of all races; and while it’s not their job to teach me, I’ve learned so much through their eyes and words. (And if you think it’s been all rainbows and butterflies, we’ve had to have some tough convos about race, too.) My advice would be as you’re hearing from all these black voices is: Listen. Don’t get defensive. As the old saying going, “Once you know better, do better.” ⁣ ⁣ Remember that your kids are impressionable young people—they learn these attitudes from YOU. They take their social cues from YOU. They hear you talking about what’s on the news even if you think they aren’t listening. They’ll ask questions that are super uncomfortable but that’s where you can actually have a real learning moment with them. While you’re at it, actually teach your children why racism exists because history class isn’t enough. And look in the mirror and at your own biases that you’ve developed throughout the years because change starts with YOU. **swipe for @janseale, who you probably recognize if you’ve been around here for while.
