The rate at which Black Americans are killed by police is more than 2 times the rate for white Americans. The main solution to addressing the systemic issues in law enforcement and criminal justice is to defund the police. That means divesting funds which have historically gone to grow and militarize law enforcement, and instead, reallocating that money to support people and services in black communities. Funding for housing, schools, hospitals and programs to address mental health, domestic abuse and homelessness are amongst the list of areas that could benefit from a piece of the billion dollar budgets that major city police departments receive. As part of this bigger strategy, police brutality cases most be prosecuted fully by DA’s who are not financed by police unions. Secrecy laws like New York State’s 50-a that hide abusive records from the public, and doctrines like Qualified Immunity that shield government officials from being sued for discretionary actions must be repealed. We must also push our local elected officials to help establish all-civilian oversight structures made up of community members who have the power to investigate and advise disciplinary actions in cases of police misconduct. These are just some of the steps we must support and call on our assembly members, public advocates, mayors, congress men and women to fight for in order to fully start addressing the systemic racism that has existed for centuries in our country. #blacklivesmatter
