While as daunting as it was, I still wanted to be honest & open about who I am since I felt as though I’d never truly REALLY feel ready. But to my surprise, once I clicked that ‘share’ button to IG, I found I had nothing to worry about. I had an outpour of love & thousands supporting me publicly & privately.. some even said it gave them enough courage to come out themselves. I was reminded of the harsh reality that so many people face in a similar situation while filming the latest season of #FilthyRichHomeless on @Sbs_Australia.. Eden, the incredible buddy I was paired with (a member of the transgender community) & many apart of the LGBTQIA+ community unfortunately do not receive the same treatment as me & are ridiculed. Countless are disowned by their families & are twice as likely to experience homelessness where they are further abused & shunned by everyday working class people. The hurt, the pain & sadness I saw was heartbreaking. It’s now #PrideMonth & while I accept I haven’t been the strongest voice for the LGBTQIA+ community over the years & my exposure to these heartbreaking issues has been very little until now - my experience on #FilthyRichHomeless & recent protests supporting the BLM movement have shown me that to fight injustice we cannot stay silent - because silent does not equal change. We are ALSO reminded that there is no PRIDE without Marsha P. Johnson - a Black transgender activist kickstarting the LGBT rights movements by throwing the brick that began the Stonewall Riots in 1969. I’m sorry I’ve stayed as quiet as I have, I’m sorry I haven’t used my platform to speak for those who do not have a voice as much as I do, but I AM proud to be apart of the LGBTQIA+ community & I want to let you know that I’m here for you, I see you, let’s work toward a better world of people who are compassionate, who fight for equality & are a whole lot kinder!
