エジプトはナイル川近隣の肥沃な土壌で採れる繊維の長い綿（超長綿）のことを指します。
世界で1年間に生産される綿約7600万トンのうち約30万トンと、0.4%しか生産量の無いとても貴重な綿種です。
超長綿（ちょうちょうめん）とはその字の通り、繊維の長さが非常に長い綿のことを呼びます。
短繊維綿（平均繊維長21ｍｍ以下）、中繊維綿（平均28ｍｍまで）、長繊維綿（平均28ｍｍ以上）と分類されているのですが、長繊維綿の中でも繊維長が平均35ｍｍ以上のものを超長綿と呼びます。
その中でもさらに上質な綿が世界三大綿とされ、スーピマ綿・新疆綿（しんきょうめん）・エジプト綿（ギザ）の3つがあげられます。
