We should not have needed this trigger. In the eleven days that have followed, the denunciation of institutional racial violence in the US has progressed to highlight the institutional, structural, interpersonal and internalised racism which pervade all societies. There is a call to be proactive and not reactive, to be vocal and not complicit, to use privilege and power for good, and not for profit. The arrest of Chauvin, Kueng, Lane and Thao is just the beginning. The police need to overturn institutional racism wherever they find it and become a force for good. The police in the UK are not innocent of institutional racism and are only legitimate as long they demonstrate transparency, integrity and accountability in policing all people. We hope that they are now reexamining their governing principle of “policing by consent” - the consent of all people. The fashion industry is no less guilty, and we at Katharine Hamnett vow to never allow complacency to infiltrate our activism.
