Since the incident in Minneapolis happened, I have really been very unsure about what to do in this situation because it is extraordinarily overwhelming to me, also to be completely honest, i have been just scared to say anything in public. As a Japanese guy growing up in Japan interacting almost only Japanese people until i moved to this country, which was 8 years ago when I was 24, racism towards African American people has seemed just something I cant have any say in. How dare I say “I understand” when I cant even imagine what it feels like to be in the place at all. Im not saying someone being killed for no reason is okay, im saying I had no idea how I get the message across. Even a week passed since I started thinking about that, I still havent gotten it figured out. But today, all of a sudden, my wife came up to me saying “There is going to be a rally in Washington Sq park and I want to go “. Actually Ive never been at any protests in my life and I never thought I would be. Because speaking up to bring up some issues is not really a way Japanese mindset works. We typically have “if you have some problem, that’s your problem and you have to endure and figure it out” kind of mentality or we have been taught to be that way by the society in Japan. Thats why we sometimes appear to be a “shy” figure.
Anyway, something struck my mind when I heard about it. Yes, this could be a great opportunity to try to understand what those who have been suffering feel because thats somewhere I can actually interact with the feelings through my eyes, ears and all the senses. So there we were, my wife and I took the A train to West 4th Street station, closest stop to Washington Sq park, joined the huge wave of people.
In conclusion, it turned out to be a significant experience. Hearing people’s voice in person resonates with me way more than over the speaker, seeing people raising their arms feel way stronger than on the screen, finding out that trying to acknowledge something will help me get it closer to me, although I can’t completely feel it. And i think that is the way, at least for me, to try and become more aware, and do my part.
