Please understand that #BlackLivesMatter does not mean that other lives do not matter (I’ve been getting AllLivesMatter DM’s). Injustice is injustice - police brutality against Blacks, racism against Asians, abuse against children - but in this moment, we need pass the microphone and come together to address the pain and despair that we all see. I want to share a quick story with you. When I was living in San Francisco, I taught in an all-male maximum security Juvenile Detention Center. I was on the most severe floor and served as one of the longest volunteer teachers there. Most of my students were African Americans. The second highest were Latinos. How could Black Americans represent 8% of the CA population, but made up of about 60% of the detention population? Yes I understand, they committed crimes. But white young men do too. What I saw was a different reality… one group was less profiled, perceived as less threatening thus had a better chance of rehabilitation, humanized and not demonized by the court system, parents had more time to dissolve their cases, had access to better attorneys, more money, and thus more power. The other group was… in jail. It was extremely easy to spot the privilege. Spending time with my students, I learned that this systemic opposition exists from the moment they were born. They saw the generational abuse their parents received from society, their normal interactions with police are riddled with fear, and they are taught in school that they are not worthy. #BlackLivesMatter is more than police brutality, it is a collective cry for real systemic change. It is a demand for structural oppression and racism to stop AND for individual racism to be re-evaluated. The AAPI community stands with you ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿」6月2日 5時09分 - wendyslookbook
