We thought that Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, and all the brave civil rights activists who risked/ sacrificed their lives did the work for us- but their hard work isn’t done. To everyone born into privilege- it is time for us to WAKE UP and help our brothers and sisters live their lives safely and with the EQUAL RIGHTS they deserve. This is going to take ALL of us. We have been asleep for too long. I believe we can do it. Love will conquer hate. Growing up in rural Georgia, I witnessed racism happening before my eyes. I saw the black community being treated differently, and it always saddened me to my core. But I always thought that the rest of the country couldn’t possibly still have racist viewpoints. I was too young to know how to be an ally to the black community then, but I can no longer stay silent. I have never experienced racism, but I stand with you. I am not black, but I share your pain. I know a lot of y’all who follow me are from the South so please hear my plea that it is EXTRA important for us to join the fight for equality. Just weeks ago, I wrongly believed America was a place where everybody could live safely, regardless of skin color. We need to work in overdrive to make our country safe for people of color now. I hope my comments will be a dialogue for people to share ways in which we can help the black community feel SAFE in their own country.
