c. 312-15, Musei Capitolini, Rome.
🔸
.
Constantine or Saint Constantine, was Roman Emperor from 306 to 337. Well known for being the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. Constantine and co-emperor Licinius issued the Edict of Milan in 313, which proclaimed tolerance of all religions throughout the empire.
🔸
.
The great head, arms and legs of the Colossus were carved from white marble, while the rest of the body consisted of a brick core and wooden framework, possibly covered with gilded bronze.
Judging by the size of the remaining pieces, the seated, enthroned figure would have been about 12 m (40 ft) high. The head is about 2.5 m (8.2 ft) high and each foot is over 2 m (6.5 ft) long.
