Everything thing you do, or don’t do or try starts with a thought or a notion. Or some curiosity or it totally stalls out because of fear. And just like any other tool in your shop. You need to learn how to use it and how it works. It also needs to be well taken care of with proper maintenance. Sometimes your mind will try to trick you. It will give you a thousand reasons why you can’t do something. It’s up to you to give it back a list of why you “can” do it. I think it was Vidal Sassoon that said “If you are not in the zone and completely involved with what u are doing? It doesn't work”. The key word in that quote is “zone”. That is your mental state. Being in that zone requires the right amount of focus/energy/rest/hydration/food. Also the right amount of confidence and happiness and clarity. And you need to be focused on what you are doing 100%. In order to keep that daily focus is the single biggest reason I stopped drinking. It was more important to me to not have a hangover interfering with my skills and work ethic. Important to note that our biggest distractions are primarily a mental thing. Example: If the sun is shining bright through the shop window and getting in your eyes? That’s a physical distraction that you can easily remedy. It takes a lot of focus to overcome the mental distractions you encounter daily. To be proactive about this every night before I fall asleep. I think about what exactly I’m going to do the next day. That way I wake up and get right after it. My mind has already been told what it’s going to focus on. I know this may sound silly but it really works for me. Some days that I forget to do this, I feel lost in the shop. Like “Ok what the hell am I doing today”. This is also a necessity when you have a ton of things going on like I do. I’m just training my mind to focus on what needs to be done in a organized way. So whatever mountain you want to climb next week. Make a list of all the reasons why you know you can do it. Then just knock it out! Mental Judo...
Believe it or not the best tool in your tool box is your mind. It can also be your worst enemy.
