My hope was that our fans may have been inspired to take a closer look at the current state of racism in their communities, in our country and a closer look at the history of racism in America. I trusted that I was doing what #MalcolmX suggested — in his autobiography and in the countless interviews and documentaries I’d watched of him — “Where the really sincere white people have got to do their ‘proving’ of themselves is not among the black victims, but out on the battle lines of where America’s racism really is — and that’s in their own home communities.” In other words, don’t tell black people what they already know, and have experienced for years, about racism. Rather, tell white people in your life what they may not know, may not care to know or may not understand about racism and racial injustice in America. Back in 1991 — I wore a denim jacket, with #MalcolmX painted on it, in an @ニュー・キッズ・オン・ザ・ブロック music video for the song (No More) Games.

On that day, in that music video, my goal was to raise awareness amongst the millions of young kids who followed my band, about racial injustice in America and about #MalcolmX, himself. My hope was that our fans may have been inspired to take a closer look at the current state of racism in their communities, in our country and a closer look at the history of racism in America.
